The Chestnuts Reviews

Miranda was helpful and a prompt communicator House was very well equipped with plenty to occupy 4 children aged 8 to 17 However it needed a good, thorough clean Some items needed repairing garden to garage door several garden chairs a kitchen chair 2 sofa beds dishwasher tablet dispenser some window catches some blinds The pizza oven was unusable! The enclosed courtyard bore little resemblance to its photo. We moved fridge freezer to clean blocked rear vents as it wasn't keeping food frozen. We cleaned blocked dishwasher arms so they would wash clean Had to sort out WiFi which didn't allow internet access initially Beds very comfy Welcome pack was a lovely touch Super old property which needed some tlc Inspite of these issues we had a great weekend! Thanks
Amazing stay at Chestnutsmade even better by the perfect round table for a game of Traitors. The facilities were great with comfortable beds, clean, quality towels and dressing gowns. The kitchen was very well equipped, with plenty of utensils and the added bonus of two fridges. Communication was efficient throughout, and any issues were resolved quicklyeven over a bank holiday weekendwhich was really appreciated. The layout and generous space made it ideal for a relaxed, sociable gathering.
A super property with lovely comfy beds and pillows but we had huge issues. Freezer not working properly. Fridge has hot to touch seal. Neither dish washers working properly Very low water pressure for shower drizzle not shower this may be the reason for dishwashers not working adequately. Beautiful bed linen. Hot tub sanitation very dodgy four of our guests contracted water born bacterial infection! BBQ left in a shockingly dirty state by previous guests Cooking trays also left in a shockingly dirty state by previous guests.

The fridge and freezer werent working and we lost a lot of frozen food as well as refrigerated items. Miranda was very helpful and returned funds so that everything could be replaced. The showers were not working. We notified the manager Saturday once people had tried to have showers we arrived Friday evening but a plumber didnt come until Sunday morning. He was unable to help which we then relayed to the manager. No apology was provided. Some of the guests then had to leave on Sunday as they still hadnt been able to wash. We loved the hot tub and the beautiful weather but without suitable showers, at least three of our guests have now got rashes and issues with their skin and suspected folliculitis. Miranda said she had let the owner know. Now we have returned we have had no updates and were advised to let the company know about our issues.
This property is absolutely beautiful. All the rooms are of a similar standard so no guest gets lumped in a substandard room. The other reviews are right about the water pressure in the showers but it doesn't ruin the property I can't imagine how anyone could really care about it when surrounded by such beautiful grounds. We didn't experience a problem getting hot water which others have mentioned. The slide is hilarious brilliant added feature for a group of friends to enjoy! Miranda was lovely to deal with and answered all my questions before arrival. Thank you so much for such a lovely weekend.
Lovely house, lovely features and safe parking. You can walk into the city or catch the frequent 2 bus. Lovely welcome pack and enjoyed the cosy robes played tableair hockey and used the hot tub. We enjoyed having two fridges, lots of plates etc and managed to get one dish washer to work... Of course in such a large property there are a few challenges e.g. hairdryers? oven's child lock...not the easiestaccessible TVs, one ensuite shower poor but we were able to overcome all these and enjoy the house and city.
The house is amazing, and was perfect for our group. The rooms are really comfortable, and there was plenty of space in the living room, dining room, kitchen for us to socialise together. The only negative really was that 1 dishwasher didn't work at all, and the other one didn't clean things very well. It felt like it needed rinse aid, or to be run on a 'dishwasher selfclean' cycle, but we were only there for a couple of days so didn't do this ourselves. To be honest we forgot to try to contact the host to ask about this whilst we were there, so not really a complaint, more of a suggestion of something they could do between guests in the future, as I think the dishwasher has comeup as an issue in other reviews? Either way it wasn't a big issue for our group, and we were all saying how we'd love to go back as overall it worked well for us. Thanks!
Judith
We had a fab weekend for our family get together, we had a couple of issues but it didn't spoil the weekend. 1 shower didn't work and the water pressure is poor, it needs a pump put in as the showers were nice. The oven is a bit complicated and 1 dishwasher leaked all over the floor and the other was a bit poor. These were flagged up in other reviews. The dinning room table was brilliant not many places that can sit 15 of you at 1 time. Back door to the garden needs to immediately be fixed as it is rotting and broken. We would book again.
Fantastic house with great features.
We had a fabulous time at the property, its such a fun house. It was the perfect size for our group, very spacious and comfortable and a great location for our plans. There were a couple of minor maintenance issues, neither dishwasher works very well, the downstairs loo has a leak and some of the cooking pans are past their best. But none of these things deterred us from having a great time. Would absolutely book again.

Whilst the house is full of character and accommodated a large group there is a lot that needs doing to improve the quality especially at the price we paid, the beds were all clean and comfy meaning we all got a good night's sleep but , the slide, hot tub and table tennis were a great hit and no one got bored. However there are some things that really need attention my suggestions for improvement are.....1st aid kit needs updating, cooker complicated and took an age to grill, no tongs or salad servers, dishwasher next to sink didn't work properly, shower pressure in all rooms need addressing, toilet leaking in downstairs loo, toilet seat in downstairs bedroom loose and taps on sink need alignment, one kitchen chair needs replacing as the back is broken, the courtyard outside kitchen windows desperately needs weeding, lots of wood around orangery is rotten meaning that closing and locking the door to the garden is difficult needs attention ASAP, the gate to the property is falling apart you have to lift the whole thing to get in, the barbecues were not fit for purpose and need replacing, several of the soft furnishings needed washing or replacing due to water marks, leaks. The decking around the hot tub has a rotting patch and needs attention and to use the lights around hot tub the plug goes in through to lounge. Some of the windows are difficult to open due to the fact they are so old and original so becareful, The property is old and full of character but it is the modern additions that are the problem, its sad that the house is tired maybe the owners should look at it with new eyes and take note of previous comments. Lastly I would like to thank Miranda who helped us out when we realised something had been left behind she answered my email immediately rang my hubby and the item was retrieved great customer service.
On arrival the house looked amazing and we did enjoy our stay. However there were heaps of things wrong bbq dirty on arrival Pizza oven dirty on arrival Drinks fridge doesnt get cold enough very quickly Oven filthy and not usuable as not cleaning other people mess! Crisps on floor in lounge Dead flies and bugs under cushions in lounge Dirty chairs around round table Rubbish bins full on arrival No washing machine detergent as welcome book states Shower downstairs in Tortworth not working only hand held shower working which is very weak Front Gate broken Garden lights not working tripping each time on Chair broken outside Chair broken in kitchen None of the TVs work Orangery roof leaking quite significantly in rain, making this room not useable when raining Twin bedroom Longfellow leak in ceiling, wall paper peeling bad staining on carpet Bedroom Conkers upstairs blinds pulley goes round but not operational in bringing blinds up or down All upstairs showers very poor Orangery door frames rotting and stick Bedroom Torme, bathroom door sticks so people get locked in there and sink taps spin rather than secured in place every single Smoke detector was consistently high pitched bleep, during our stay, batteries may need changing? Kept going 24 hours a day!! All outside bins were full on arrival so rubbish bags all left in garage by bins Visitors book mentions washing machine detergent left for convenience but there was none Tiles chipped and lifted in downstairs cloakroom Huge amount of lamps and lights not working, maybe bulbs? Lots of electrical sockets not working Downstairs cloakroom toilet has a big leak when flushed! The seal has gone at the back, meaning when flushed it squirts water up at you which then obviously drops onto the floor Main bathroom upstairs has leak on ceiling and in bad state of repair Huge cobwebs everywhereexpect them in impossible to reach places but not in easy to clean places Pool cues ends missing x 2 and the remaining one is very worn down 2 x end heaters in orangery dont work Garage door does fit properly Generally house in poor state and needs lots of money spent on it, plus staining on all carpets and all furniture Istan bathroom light not working above bath Conkers light flickers
The Chestnut was the perfect home base for our family during our stay in Peterborough. This charming vintage property gave us plenty of space to relax and unwind, all while wrapping us in the nostalgia of a bygone era with the modern comforts we appreciate today. Every detail in the dcor was thoughtfully curated, making it feel both welcoming and unique. Thank you!
We booked Chestnuts for a family celebration and had a fabulous time. Our family ranged from 4 to 80 years old and there was something for everyone to do. Our Granddaughter loved the trampoline, games and slide to the cinema room. The youngsters enjoyed the pool, air hockey and table tennis table and made good use of the gym while others chilled in the hot tub. Bedrooms were spacious, clean and very comfortable. Not surprisingly for a large house the water pressure was poor and in some showers the temperature control proved difficult. However, we soon realised that by deconflicting shower times it was manageable. We also took note of somebody else's advice to make sure the dehumidifier was used in the cinema room. That made a difference. The kitchen had everything we needed but would benefit from more pint glasses as we don't all drink champagne. Otherwise, it's perfect and thanks for the wine and cake on arrival. Whilst the property could undoubtedly do with some TLC we had a fabulous time and would recommend it to others. It's in a great location with loads to do and was perfect for our family to get together and spend quality time together for our parents Diamond Wedding Anniversary and Mum's 80th birthday celebration. Finally, Miranda was extremely helpful managing the property with prompt response to my communication prior to arrival. Thank you.
Our friends said Peterborough? What on earth for? Our visit was a great success, and we found the city interesting and full of facilities for our family group. The house is magnificent, we enjoyed the gym, hot tub and the indoor games. The young men of the family loved the indoor slide! Having the great round table made family meals very lively. The only downside was the parking issue, but that's not yours to solve. Anyway we made do. All in all a great long weekend, Thank you.
A fantastic stay at this gorgeous property for my wife's 40th. The house just lends itself to celebrations and large family groups. Everything is well thought out and the owners have tried to think of everything you might want or need. The beds are so comfortable you might not want to get up. There were a couple of things you'd expect from an older house like the water pressure being a little temperamental on occasions and takes a while to warm the house but loved it.
Louise
The house was perfect for the big group of us and had everything we needed. The only thing that stops me giving it a 10 is the poor quality showers.
Caroline
Fabulous large house for a family or group celebration. Plenty of facilities to keep our group of 9 adults and 5 children entertained all weekend and the novelty of the secret slide did not wear off! The hot tub, and games table were great. Well equipped kitchen to cater for large groups and a huge dining table that could seat us all. Miranda was very responsive and informative when I contacted her with questions prior to our stay. Additional touches included a lovely welcome basket for our arrival and a beautiful Christmas tree in the grand living room as well as providing robes in each bedroom and additional towels for the hot tub. My only disappointment was not being able to stay longer. I would certainly recommend and would love to return should there be a suitable group occasion in the future.
This is a wonderful property versatile for sleeping arrangements, spacious and wellequipped. We had a mixture of generations and it was perfect house for our family celebration. There was plenty to keep everyone entertained and would have happily stayed longer.
Fantastic stay at Chestnuts. So many family activities catered for. The welcome basket was a lovely touch too. Big sized rooms and everything you could possibly need for a fun weekend
Kayleigh
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and thank you for allowing us to use your beautiful home. We had a wonderful time and the house was as advertised and very close to local amenities. This was made all the better with very comfortable beds and lovely bedding which created an enjoyable and relaxing sleep.
Trenna
We spent a fabulous weekend at the Chestnuts. The house was amazing with plenty of space for all of us. The garden was an added bonus with hot tub for the adults, trampoline for the kids and bbq for the whole family. Would highly recommend this house and would love to go again.
Nicola
13 of us stayed for my dad's 80th birthday celebration and we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay! I read a couple of bad reviews about cleanliness and facilities not being 100 which concerned me. I contacted Miranda who is the housekeeper who promptly called me to put any doubts to rest. When we arrived the house was beautiful and absolutely spotless. The facilities were in constant use all weekend apart from air hockey as we could not find the lead. The hot tub was a God send as weather was great. My nephew enjoyed the trampoline, we all enjoyed the pool table and everyone seemed to gather in the large but homely kitchen. BBQ was great Saturday and the fantastically equipped kitchen cupboards came in handy when cooking a roast on Sunday couldn't find a can opener but bought one at local shop and gifted to the otherwise well equipped cutlery drawer
You failed to offer us an alternative weekend so we would never recommend you to anyone
We had the loveliest time while we was away, and made some amazing memories, we could definitely come back again. There were a few things broken or not cleaned properly when we got there but none of this stopped us enjoying ourselves. The only reason I am telling you this is so it can be even better then it already is. The carpet was coming adrift on stairs There was Red wine stain under sofa in living room near mirror Toilet chain loose in bedroom on suite which only has a shower and toilet There was no TV signal in living room Large water mark on puffy in living room The toaster only 1 side works properly The filters in dishwasher hasn't being cleaned There was no chemicals in hottub so by Saturday evening it wasn't very pleasant to use. Amazing things that stood out to us The robes on the beds The comfort of the beds and pillows All the essentials that was in the kitchen bin bags, washing up liquid ect The facilities in the games room The slide was a winner The extra fridge was a massive help We are already talking about booking again for next year, thanks again and we hope that we left everything in the best possible way we could.
There were two problems that weren't huge but The house was cold when we arrived and didn't warm up all evening. We all ended up sitting in the kitchen with the wood burning stove. Also the water pressure was generally very low which made showers unappealing. Otherwise it was a lovely property.
Annette
We had an amazing time at The Chestnuts this Christmas. The house was warm and welcoming, dressed for Christmas. The children aged between 2 13 had plenty to occupy themselves, the slide and trampoline were a great hit! The hot tub was fantastic! There was so much room, the beds were comfortable and the house was well equipped we really couldnt ask for more!
We had an amazing weekend celebrating my husbands 30th birthday. We arrived to a beautiful hamper filled with lovely goodies. The house was clean and had everything we could have possibly wanted. The photos online do not do the house justice! Its beautiful.
The house was beautiful and had so much to keep everyone occupied. The house manager spoilt us with gifts for our main guest who she knew was very poorly terminally and couldnt do enough to make sure our stay was perfect. Perfect weekend in a perfect house! Would love to go back!
Billie
House was great for our group of friends and the dining area was fantastic for a dinner party. House is large and the bedrooms have plenty of room with comfy beds. Overall a great stay and the only thing wed have said at the time was we could have used more cleaning products, toilet rolls etc as we had to buy more. Since our stay we had a claim for 500 to replace the hot tub lid which was quite obviously broken when we arrived. I explained this but the claim was continued against us. Since then weve sent the photo and video evidence of the lid on our arrival which we luckily had. Overall great house for a large group but any damage you notice on arrival ensure you send to Sykes.
A wonderful house for a family gathering. We had fun with the slide, games table, hot tub and trampoline. Super dining room with very large dining table and comfortable lounge. Spacious bedrooms , very comfortable beds and lovely bed linen, towels and robes. A stair gate was requested but there wasnt one. Only one of the two dishwashers worked and the hot water system failed. However Miranda the house keeper was very helpful and arranged for a plumber to attend and he sorted the hot water for us. The plumber noted that the airing cupboard had an immersion heater with dangerous exposed wiring connections and he disconnected it. We had a very enjoyable weekend.
We had an awesome long weekend. There were 15 of us with ages ranging from 570 and everyone had a really great time. There was loads for us all to do.
1010 would recommend staying here. The house is absolutely beautiful. Everything is lovely and clean. Fluffy towels and dressing gowns provided and smelt amazing. Host was very accommodating and went the extra mile to get the house ready for us early. All the beds were really comfortable. Garden, hot tub and trampoline, all great. We would definitely stay here again. Thanks so much!
The house is incredible. Huge amount of space with a massive round dining table and wonderful rooms. My only gripes were that the water pressure was awful and the fire alarm wouldnt stop beeping for the duration of our stay. The property manager did offer for someone to take a look at it to fix it however. Great place to stay as a big group.
Great house for large group, lounge and dining room really spacious. However the shower pressure was really poor especially in one of the ensuites also the front door locking system was difficult to manage. Despite this we had a great time and would recommend for large groups
